Here is Dr. Pasha's E-Letter # 12 coming your way. I hope you find it useful.
Wishing You a Happy New Year -- 1427-H!
And I so feel like wishing you a very Happy (and Prosperous?) New Year.
Just like so many people tend to do on these occasions. Or should I, really?
The beautiful and wonderful Hijri year, Inshallah, of 1427-H!
Allah is the maker and master of time, right? We all know that, as Allah says in the Qur'an: Wal-'Asr -- By Time. It is his thing -- time, I mean. He makes it; he knows it; and he manages it.
Qur'an says: Inna 'Iddatash-Shuhoori 'Indallah -- the month count by Allah's calculation is 12 months.
Even more so, there is a Hadith that says: Anad-Dhar. I am Dahr, says Allah, according to that Hadith, whatever the meaning of the word Dahr -- time, age, Zamaana for the Urdu/Farsi folks, the continuous churning and turning of the cosmos in an endless space-time interaction.
I don't know what any of it means. But that is what Allah says he is -- Dahr -- according to that Hadith.
And there is a bit of a warning in that Hadith which comes down to, "You'd better be careful what you say about things such as time, weather and the rest." An important lesson for those of us who have a penchant for going off about the weather -- the cold, snow and ice in North America; hurricanes, cyclones and typhoons elsewhere; floods and excessive rains in some other places; and burning and boiling temperatures in yet other parts of the world.
Allah, however, does not operate by lunar (moon) or solar (sun) calendars. To Allah there is no future, past or present. To him all time is now. To him all time is no time.
And to him all things happen now -- when and as he tells them to happen.
So far as he is concerned, with regard to everything and anything, all he has to do is say "Be!" and, lo and behold, "There it is!"
Fun Here, Fun There: The Miracle of Having Your Cake and Eating It Too!
So, may he make this new year of 1427-H -- and all our time in this world -- a joyous, fruitful, prosperous, productive, beautiful, wonderful time for all of us -- full of the most wonderful peace and blessings and gifts from him!
In the form of Deen and Iman and health and wealth and happiness ... and whatever other good things we need or our hearts desire.
And may he fill our lives in the next world with even more of his blessings, love, mercy, grace, joy and peace!
As the Qur'an says: Rabbanaa, Aatinaa Fid-Dunyaa Hasanatan, wa Fil-Aakhirati Hasanah!
Don't get upset with me if I say: Good Stuff here, Good Stuff there. Or in language that is a bit more American, Fun here, Fun there.
But that is another one of those little miracles of Islam: a sure formula for "Having Your Cake and Eating It Too."
If Allah had given us nothing but that one Du'a -- that most amazing, comprehensive prayer that there is in this world -- it would have sufficed to turn our earthly life into a patch of heavenly paradise. It would have given us enough fun to fill two lifetimes: one right here in this world, the other, after our death and resurrection, in the next world.
Allahu Akbar! What a Deen, what a Rabb, what a Rasul, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, and what a glorious book that he brought with him from Allah -- the Qur'an!
The Miracle of the Source: Where the World Got its Islam From
So, that is where the world got its Islam from, right? From Prophet,Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam's sayings and doings, correct?
And of course from the Qur'an! And, of course, the Qur'an is what he says it is and it means what he says it means, right?
Who was it who said: Ba-Mustafaa Bi-Rasaan Kheesh Raa Ki Deen HamaOost? Does anyone know who said it? Iqbal, do you think? Allah bless Iqbal. And Allah bless his beloved Rasul, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam! Who but Iqbal would say something like this?
Farsi stuff. Means roughly, Go, drag yourself all the way to Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, for Deen is all him -- or he (for you English purists?).
In any case, all the Islamic practices and traditions and culture, where do they all come from? From the words and deeds -- from the utterances and actions -- of Allah's beloved Rasul, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, right?
That is, other than what the Qur'an itself has to teach us directly?
Thus, it is fair to say that we know -- the world knows -- Islam and things Islamic, through:
(A) Either the Qur'an directly telling us.
(B) Or Rasul, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, telling and teaching us and explaining to us.
(B) Or Rasul, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, actually showing us through personal practice.
That is why, even as I wish to extend to you my heartfelt greetings for the New Year, I cannot help asking myself: Should I even be doing that?
Did Rasulullah, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, do that himself?
Or did he leave instructions asking us to do that?
Or is that what the Qur'an asked us to do? I mean run around exchanging greetings on the Islamic New Year?
The answer of course is none of the above. But does that mean we will be completely and unpardonably wrong for doing that, if we chose to do that? Who is to answer that question?
Does anyone even realize what a miracle this is? This miracle of the source?
The Miracle of God Preserving and Protecting Islam -- And Islamic Knowledge
The fact that there is but one, unified source for Islam in the world? What a miracle it is. And what a blessing from God.
That means, unlike a great many people in the world, we were most fortunate to get our Deen directly -- and as a complete package -- from Allah's book and from Allah's Rasul, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam -- and not in the from of bits and scraps from all kinds of archeological digs or chance discoveries in long-last caves.
What a miracle -- the completeness, authenticity and integrity of the sources of Islamic knowledge, practice and culture in the world!
Things like this do not happen by themselves. They do not happen by chance. They only happen when God Almighty wants and plans and designs them to happen.
It is all part of the fulfillment of God Almighty's ringing declaration in the Qur'an -- about the Qur'an: We are the one who sent it down and we are going to be the one to protect and preserve it!
What a marvelous miracle this is! Yet, another one. In this ongoing count of the countless miracles of Allah's beloved Rasul, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam. And of this most amazing Deen and Qur'an that he brought from Allah -- Subhaanahu wa Ta'aala.
Again, a miracle unlike any that this world has ever seen.
The Miracle of Continuity
The problem of our world is discontinuity. Great men come and great men go away after they teach some great things to people. And most of their teachings, after they are gone, wither and die due to the passage of time and lack of support among people. Or they get distorted and adulterated beyond recognition.
But not so the teachings of Sayyidina Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam. In fact, one of the great miracles of his teachings is their great and most amazing continuity.
The mission of the Prophet, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, in this world lasted 23 years -- actually 20 years, if you discount the first three years of uncertainty. During that period, he personally taught his followers all that he brought from Allah.
And all that they -- and the rest of humanity for ever and ever -- needed to know to live a perfect life in this world. Even as they continued their march to an even better and more perfect life in the next world.
Thus unfolded the most amazing miracle of the seamless and timeless continuity and preservation of the glorious message and mission of the Prophet, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam, on earth -- even as it is preserved in heaven.
A miracle unlike any that this world has ever seen -- with regard to any individual human beings or congeries of events or set of circumstances.
And just to drive home to everyone the uniqueness of this miracle, Allah also made sure that no other figure in history and no one else's teachings and legacy -- and no other set of events or circumstances or period of time in the world -- enjoyed this privilege.
As a result, while all other historical figures remain shrouded in the mist and mystery of time and speculation -- subject to all kinds of historical construction, interpretation and deconstruction -- his life remains an open book and a shining pillar of pure and pristine light for all to see -- in all ages and places.
What a miracle of continuity down the ages -- for his entire message and an entire way of life built on that message.
The Miracle of the Unlettered Man Personally Training a Whole Nation
And this is partly how it happened. This Unlettered Man personally trained and educated tens of thousands of people in the divine way of life of which he was the last and final messenger from God.
And he carried out that most amazing and unique experiment of personal training at a time when there were not too many classrooms around. When not too many books or libraries were around. And when none of the means and technologies of mass communication that have since proliferated were around.
Listen to what the Qur'an has to say on the subject. Not once or twice, but over and over.
His job -- the job of this Unlettered Man, from an Unlettered People, as we saw in my earlier E-Letters -- was, according to the Qur'an, Ta'leem.
"Yu'allimuhum," says the Qur'an: He gives people Ilm -- knowledge, education.
And Ta'leem means teaching -- education. No ifs or buts, it is education/teaching, plain and simple.
An Unlettered Man in charge of the divine mission of educating the world? The whole world?
What a scenario! What a cave, as a friend of mine says -- the cave in which he received his first message from God.
And what a man! And what a mission!
Allah's beloved Rasul, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam!
The greatest benefactor of humanity. May Allah shower his choicest blessings upon him and upon all the prophets and messengers of God -- those we know as well as those we do not know.
I Am Glad You Are with Us

Nothing but Drafts
Do bear in mind, however, that our manuscripts -- whatever we write, put on the Web or send in the form of letters and E-mails, etc. -- are mostly drafts in need of further research and revision, which we are often unable to undertake or complete due to serious time and resource constraints.
Part of that time and resource constraint is our inability to be more exact in our Transliteration. If there are inconsistencies, please overlook them.
Don't Forget Us in Your Du'as!
As you read, please do not forget me, my family, my parents, my teachers and my ancestors in your Du’as.
And all those wonderful people, Allah bless them, who may help me, now or in future, with this immense project. Especially, our wonderful Webmaster, Allah bless him, who slaps these E-Letters on the Web with the same speed with which I finish writing them.
And do please find within you the generosity and compassion to forgive me if I have in any way offended you; or said something I should not have said; or said it in a way that you thought was not appropriate.
Ask Allah to forgive me for any errors that there may be in my E-Letters and to protect me from them in future.
May Allah be with you!
Where and in the way you want him to be!
Allahummaghfir Li-Ummati Muhammadin, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam!
Wassalaamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullah!
