Assignment 34: Verbs, Verbs, Verbs

Instructions

a) This and all previous assignments must be completed and mastered by September 21, Monday, 4:00 PM.

b) If your Nafs is driving any of  this, and if your motive -- your Niyyat -- is to get name, fame, wealth and other worldly gains and benefits -- then you may as well not do it. For, that is a recipe for Jahannam.

c) I consider Transliteration Haram, except perhaps for the most limited Educational Purposes

d) And I consider Color Coding of selected words in the Mushaf also Haram, though perhaps to a lesser degree. 

Call these things a Fatwas of some kind if you wish!

e) Always, recite all Arabic words aloud and correctly and in the clearest diction.

f) Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.

Now, A Look at the Verbs

1. Three-Letter Verbs -- Past Tense.

a) Fa-‘A-La

Examples: 

Azama;
Daraba;
Fasada 
Fataha; 
Hadama;
Hashara;
Hazama;
Ja-‘Ala;
Kasara;
Kashafa;
Kharaja
Nasara; 
Nazala;
Qara-A; 
Qatala; 
Sabara;
Sadaqa;
Wahaba;
Wajada; 
Warada;
Wasala.

2. Four-Letter Verbs -- Past Tense.

a) Af-‘Ala

Examples:

Abtala;
Ahsana;
Ahyaa -- Ahyaya;
Akrama;
Anzala;
Arsala;
Asaaba -- Asyaba;
Aslama;
Awuhaa -- Awuhaya.

b) Fa’-Ala

Examples:

Dabbara;
Dammara;
Dhakkara;
Ghayyara;
Kabbara;
Laqqana;
Qabbala;
Qaddara;
Sabbaha;
Saddaqa;
Sallaa -- Sallaya;
Sammaa -- Sammaya;

3. Five-Letter Verbs -- Past Tense.

a) Ifta-‘Ala

Examples:

Ibtada-a -- Ibtada-a;
Ibtalaa -- Ibtalaya;
Ijtahada;
Iktataba;
Imtahana;
Intaqama;
Intasara;
Iqtadara;
Ittajaha -- Iwutajaha;
Ittakhaza;
Iztakara -- Iddakara.

b) Tafa-‘Ala

Examples:

Tabahhara;
Tabassara;
Tadabbara;
Taghayyara;
Tamahhasa;
Taqabbala;
Taqayyada;
Tasawwara;
Tawajjaha.

c) Tafa-‘Ala

Examples:

Tajaahala;
Takaathara;
Tanaasara;
Taqaabala;
Tazaalama;
Tawaasaa -- Tawaasaya.

d) Infa-‘Ala

Examples:

Inhadama;
Inhasara;
Inhazama;
Inkasara;
Inkashafa;
Insarama.

4. Six-Letter Verbs -- Past Tense.

a. Istaf-‘Ala.

Examples:

Istabsara;
Istahlafa;
Istakhlafa;
Istansara.

Assignment 34: Additional Instructions

  1. Read every verb and its structure. How it is formed and how it changes.
  2. Repeat. 
  3. Chant Aloud.
  4. Memorize.
  5. Take each verb and go as far as you can go with it -- using Mu’jam and Dictionaries.
  6. If found in the Qur’an, locate in Mushaf in the Aayat or in the Aayaat (Plural) in which it occurs.
  7. Use it as basis of all your future Adventures in Arabic Language until September 21 and beyond.
