Did You Know?

There was a time when the world was a pretty messed up place: pretty much the way it is today.

In that world, at that time, fathers, that is right, biological fathers, proud and normal men, when a daughter was born to them, they took that little girl in their arms, marched out to the wilderness, dug a hole in the desert and buried her alive in that hole.

That is how ashamed they were of the fact that their wives had given birth to a female child. Their faces turned black with fury and shame. And they did not rest till they had gotten rid of that mark of disgrace on their name.

And did you know that is when Islam came down from God – 1400 years ago? And it banned this evil, inhuman practice summarily?

Two simple Aayats proclaimed the death knell of this mark of shame on the face of humanity:

  1. Wa Idhal Mawu-oodatu Su-ilat.
  2. Bi-ayyi Dhanbin Qutilat.

Paraphrase:

  1. “When, on the Day of Judgment, the little girl that was buried alive shall be asked.”
  2. “For What Crime Was She Killed?”

Among all the other things associated with these two aayahs of the Qur’an, the stark simplicity and directness of their language makes my skin crawl. It sends shivers down my entire body.

All adulthood, the perpetrators as well as the spectators of this crime, will be held at bay while this innocent little girl will be asked to speak and tell her story.

Does anyone see how contemporaneous the language of the Qur’an is – this Qur’an that lies outside the bounds of time and space: For What Crime Was She Killed?

Yes, that is how Islam banned Female Infanticide during its time: when Islam first came down in Arabia, 14 centuries ago.

Since the Muslims have gone dormant, and have persistently failed to do their mission of taking the Qur’an to every home and heart that needs it, around the world, millions of little girls are murdered or aborted in places like China and India today.

This time, who will be asked on the Day of Judgment about all the little girls killed in India and China: For What Crime Was She Killed?

Bi-ayyi Dhanbin Qutilat?

How will Muslims answer that question – should they happen to be the ones having to answer it?
