I Too Have A Dream!

And then all these other dreams that I have.
Some of them are such that I hesitate to voice them.
For, these are often not the words one is used to hearing from a Muslim.
But to anyone who knows and understands Islam, they are all part of the teachings of the Qur’an and the Rausl, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam!
Therefore, give utterance to these other dreams I must.
In doing this I must share with you my secret pain and my secret hopes and prayers.
Much as Iqbal, Rahmatullahi Alaihi, did when his heart was wounded and laden with the burden of the wrongs that he saw around him.
Wrongs, on the one hand, committed by misguided humans against their maker and master, Allah the Almighty.
And wrongs, also, committed by them against Allah’s creation.
But my pain is really a double pain, even beyond this.
One comes from all the wrong things one sees around oneself – all the omissions and commissions, all the failures and perpetrations, all the might-have-beens, all the missed opportunities.
The other comes from the ignorance, indifference, helplessness and inability of those who are in a position to bring about a positive change, to make a positive contribution.
By this I mean all those people whom Allah made his own vicegerents and representatives on earth, which will include the entire human race.
At the same time, I mean in particular those who know this fact, and who accept it and are committed to it and yet are either unable or unwilling to work to make this world a better place for all of Allah’s creation, which will include all the Muslims.
What could be sadder than the wave of involuntary hesitancy that surges within me as I contemplate voicing some of these dreams of mine.
Yet, I have no choice but to voice them and lay bare my wounded heart and soul before my fellow-Muslims and fellow-humans, even as Iqbal, may Allah bless him, did:
Har dardmand dil ko rona mera rula dey;
Ghaflat main jo padey hain shayad unehn jagadya
Meaning:
“I hope my crying will make others cry also and wake up those who lie in deep slumber”
It is, therefore, my dream that the air in Trinidad and Tobago – and in the rest of the world – will be cleaner tomorrow than it is today.
That the water in Trinidad and Tobago – and in the rest of the world – will be purer tomorrow than it is today.
That the rain forest in Trinidad and Tobago – that amazing divine factory for manufacturing oxygen and supplying it to humans and beasts free of cost – and elsewhere will have a stronger and longer lease on life tomorrow than it does today.
I have a dream that crime in Trinidad and Tobago – as elsewhere – will be less, and homes and streets in Trinidad and Tobago – and elsewhere – will be safer, tomorrow than today.
I also dream of the day when drug use and transaction in Trinidad and Tobago – and elsewhere – will be much, much less tomorrow than today.
That alcohol and tobacco use and abuse will be much, much less in Trinidad and Tobago – and elsewhere – tomorrow than today.
And then I have this other dream.
I have a dream that every young man and woman in Trinidad and Tobago will be united in the honored and blessed bonds of marriage.
That they will live, as married couples, in accordance with the time-honored laws of God, in the state of blessed matrimony, chaste and clean lives, as dutiful and obedient slaves of God on God’s bountiful plantation, toiling ceaselessly to make it a better place for all.
