Assalamu alaikum!

I hope and pray that this letter will find you all in the best of health.

This letter (E-Letter # 7) should have come to you before the previous one (E-Letter # 6). That is how I had originally planned it.

But Allah has his own plan, and it is his plan that prevails. And who would want it otherwise?

In the earlier letters I had spoken — if I recall right — about miracles in Islam. Let us return to that theme for a second if you will. Because what else is Islam if not one huge miracle — from beginning to end?

And a collection, at the same time, of a million miracles of all kinds in every aspect of it?

Some of them — these miracles — known and understood by some people; most, unknown, unrecognized and unappreciated by most. And they will continue to unfold as Allah’s world changes, evolves and moves toward the end he has set for it.

As someone once said, and as my mother, Allah bless her, always used to read:

Aankh Waalaa Teyri Qudrat Kaa Tamaasha DeyKhey!

May Allah, Rabbul Izzat, open our eyes and hearts to the wonders of his Deen.

Miracles of Allah’s Beautiful Names

Let us then return to the promise I made — if I recall right — before I went offline — several months ago — to talk about the miracle of Allah’s most beautiful names. For, to me, no matter where I look in Islam, what I find is a cornucopia of miracles.

Al-Asmaa’ Al-Husnaa — Allah’s beautiful names — as the Qur’an refers to them.

What a beautiful expression, in and of itself: Al-Asmaa’ Al-Husnaa — the beautiful names! And this expression has come to be associated — almost exclusively, is it correct to say? — with the names of Almighty Allah.

And what an amazing and wonderful miracle in and by itself it is — this expression I mean: Al-Asmaa’ Al-Husnaa!

Allahu Akbar!

And then we can marvel at the individual miracles that those individual names contain — each one of them separately — if they could be separated at all.

All ninety-nine of them by some official counts, including a Hadith of Sayyidina Muhammad, Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam. But beyond all count in reality and truth.

For, to Allah, and to Allah alone, belong all beautiful names.

For, how could it be otherwise? How could those glorious names — all of them or any single one of them — belong to anyone else?

How could anything of any kind belong to anyone else, when he is the one — the only one — who made and owns everything, and no one else made or can make anything, and therefore can really lay claim to nothing?

Nothing at all — not a thing, big or small!

Not one iota!

Not, as the Qur’an taught us to realize 1400 years ago, an atom’s worth or smaller!

The Miracle of the Atom and of an Atomic Theory in the Qur’an?

An atom — Dharrah — or a part thereof!

That is right. That is what the Qur’an talks about: an atom or something tinier and smaller than that.

Does anyone even realize what is being said here?

And this was hundreds of years before the world realized there were atoms in this world.

Or that an individual atom itself could be split and divided into its many component parts — protons, neutrons, and whatever else it is that an atom is supposed to be made up of.

I hope I got all those names right. Forgive and correct me if I did not.

Talk about miracles — in the Qur’an! And in Islam!

Propounding an atomic theory before a millennium and a half before the world came around to thinking about it?

And all those living and ongoing miracles in the everyday life of Muslims themselves — such as the Muslims are — if only I had the time to explain.

Key to True Happiness

It is to Allah, therefore, that everything belongs. And it is Allah, therefore, that owns, plans, runs and manages everything.

To know this, and to accept it with the fullness of one’s heart, is to find the key to true happiness and success — both here and in the hereafter. To have doubts or questions about it is the sure path to a miserable existence — both here and in the hereafter.

As the Qur’an says: Wa Man A’arada ‘An Dhikree, Fa-Inna Lahoo Ma’eeshatan Dankaa.

Al-Asmaa’ Al-Husnaa

Back then to Al-Asmaa’ Al-Husnaa!

A most glorious and overpowering star-burst of Allah’s beautiful names, in the midst of which I am trying — unsuccessfully — to hold myself back from talking about Ar-Rahmaan and Ar-Raheem specifically.

But how can I not talk about Ar-Rahmaan and Ar-Raheem when Allah’s own book is full of them?

When Allah’s own book begins with Ar-Rahmaan Ar-Raheem, and when every chapter of Allah’s book begins with Ar-Rahmaan Ar-Raheem — except for Surah Taubah?

Ar-Rahmaan: An Attributive Name that Is First Among Equals

But suffice it to say there is nothing, and no one, nicknamed Ar-Rahmaan.

There is no one whose second name is Ar-Rahmaan.

There is no one the first among whose 98 attributive names is Ar-Rahmaan — Allah being his first and proper name.

Except of course Allah, the Most Merciful — Ar-Rahmaan — master of the worlds and God of Rahmah. One whose mercy, love, compassion and caring know no bounds or limits.

Laa Ilaaha Illaa Huw! It is only right, fair and proper that he — and he alone — should be our lord, God and master!

Sent his messenger as mercy to the worlds — Rahmatul Lil ‘Aalameen!

Rahmaan for all, Raheem for some?

Allahu akbar! Limiting and channelling his mercy?

A-Hum Yaqsimoona Rahmata Rabbik? Are they the ones doling out the mercy and love of your master?

How could they? And how dare they?

Rahmaan here and now, Raheem then and later?

Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar! Allahu Akbar!

Does the Difference Matter?

But there is one distinction that does seem to hold: Rahmaan in himself, Raheem in his outreach to his creation — Khalq. But who is to say?

What he says is that he is both Ar-Rahmaan and Ar-Raheem — the most merciful, loving, caring, compassionate, gracious, beneficent and the most merciful, loving, caring, compassionate, gracious, beneficent. And the same all over again — one more time. Eternally and endlessly, no matter how you look at it.

Not just once but twice over, Ar-Rahmaan and Ar-Raheem — which is a standing miracle in itself.

The Miracle of the Missing “Wau“!

Did anyone notice that these two names, the way he uses them in his book are not separated by an “and” — the letter Wau in Arabic language? It is not Ar-Rahmaan War Raheem. It is Ar-Rahmaan Ar-Raheem!

Not once — not twice, but every time the Qur’an uses those expressions — all 114 times of them.

What amazing model of consistency coming out of the mouth of an unlettered man — a man who could neither read nor write, that God Almighty raised up in a culture of unlettered people, most of whom could themselves neither read nor write.

All this at a time when there was no computer equipment or printing press and when books and libraries were most uncommon.

It is nothing short of another one of those miracles — those most amazing things that the Qur’an is so full of.

But what does it mean — this case of the missing “wau” between Ar-Rahmaan Ar-Raheem?

I don’t know, except that it leaves me speechless and wonder-struck. The fact that nothing separates the two: Ar-Rahmaan Ar-Raheem!

Does it mean, among whatever else it means, nothing comes between the eternal and boundless fount of that love and mercy and its eternal and timeless and limitless flow?

Not even an “and” — a tiny little “Wau”?

I don’t know!

Except, of course, to say what the Qur’an itself says: Rahmatee Wasi’at Kulla Shai’!

Figuring out the Miracles Around Us

It is just one, uninterrupted, unstoppable flood of divine mercy, love, compassion, tenderness, caring, beneficence, munificence and the rest. You think about that and you go and figure that out, as someone I know put it recently — may Allah bless him!

The man has a Ph.D. in engineering. But that did not stop him, Alhamdulillah, from using his brainpower, and his training and education, to “think” and to try to “figure out” the marvels and miracles of Allah’s Deen.

Nor did it stop him from inviting his fellow-Muslims and fellow-humans to do likewise.

It is Allah’s kingdom. He guides whom he wants, how and when he wants.

As for those whom Allah misleads, you will find neither helper nor guide for them.

Wa Many-Yudlil, Fa-lan Tajida
Lahu Waliyyam Murshida!

Overflow of Allah’s Mercy

But what is inescapable is the overflow of Allah’s mercy from every direction that envelops his creation in every way. And who could better say it than Allah himself:

Rahmatee Wasi’at Kulla Shai?

Paraphrase:

My mercy, love, tenderness, kindness, caring, beneficence, compassion and grace extend to everything.

Or his angels whom he taught and made to say:

Rabbanaa Wasi’ta Kulla Shai-in Rahmatan wa Ilmaa!

And then did you ever take time out to “think” about those ninety-nine lovely names of Allah? How so many of them actually talk about his infinite caring, giving, love, generosity and kindness in different ways and under different headings?

Rahmaan had to be coupled with Raheem, as if one was not enough!

More Than Ar-Rahmaan Ar-Raheem? How Is It Possible?

And as if all this was not enough, these two most glorious names and attributes had to be further highlighted by other names and attributes — such as Ghafoor and Ghaffaar!

What can I say? I am speechless and wonderstruck.

While so many of us are so busy fighting one another over so many issues, most of them so trivial and inconsequential, I feel all I want to do is to lose myself in the beauty of these two most beautiful names of Allah — and let my whole being, let every cell in my body, be dazzled and lit up by the power, majesty, radiance and glory of these two names and attributes of Allah.

And then move on to do what little I can to let the rest of the world know about them and share their glory, light, majesty, power and brilliance!

Allahummarham Ummata Muhammadin Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam!

Nothing but Drafts

And do bear in mind that our manuscripts — whatever we write, put on the Web or send in the form of letters and E-mails, etc. — are mostly drafts in need of further research and revision, which we are often unable to undertake or complete due to time and resource constraints.

As you read, please do not forget me, my parents, teachers and ancestors in your Du’as.

And do please find within you the generosity and compassion to forgive me if I have in any way offended you; or said something I should not have said; or said it in a way I should not have.

May Allah be with you!

Where and in the way you want him to be!
